GREAT REFORM ACT DEL 1832.

Abstract (It) Il contributo ripercorre la tortuosa strada che portò all’approvazione del Great Reform Act nel 1832. Dopo una riflessione di natura generale sui sistemi elettorali e sulla nozione di rappresentanza, il saggio prosegue con un excursus sulle origini del sistema elettorale inglese, contrassegnato fin dalle origini da una natura censitaria. Il lavoro analizza quindi le disfunzioni del sistema elettorale britannico nel periodo precedente il 1832, il cui emblema erano i rotten boroughs e le istanze di riforma per modificarlo. Il saggio si conclude infine con la promulgazione del Great Reform Act e con una breve riflessione sugli effetti di tale legge nell’ordinamento inglese.

Abstract (En) This contribution retraces the tortuous path that led to the approval of the Great Reform Act in 1832. After a general reflection on electoral systems and on the notion of representation, the essay continues with an excursus on the origins of the English electoral system, marked from the beginning by a census nature. The work then analyses the dysfunctions of the British electoral system in the period prior to 1832, the emblem of which were the rotten boroughs, and the demands for reform to change it. The essay concludes with the promulgation of the Great Reform Act and a brief reflection on the effects of this law in the English legal system.
